Manchester City appeals verdict on 114 financial rule breaches

Manchester City has filed a formal appeal against an independent commission's ruling that found the club guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The breaches, spanning nine seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18, involved allegations of using sham commercial contracts to artificially inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million. The commission also found the club failed to cooperate adequately with the investigation.

The club maintains its innocence, stating the decision contains “clear material errors of law, principle and fact” and asserting they possess “irrefutable evidence” to support their position. The Football Association noted that the verdict has “significant implications for the integrity of the game.”

While the appeal process is underway, final sanctions have not yet been determined. Potential penalties could include heavy fines, points deductions, or even expulsion from the Premier League. Meanwhile, whistleblower Rui Pinto, whose Football Leaks provided much of the initial evidence, has reported receiving death threats and is seeking relocation due to the end of his witness protection program.
