Manchester City defeats Sunderland 5-3 in eight-goal thriller
Manchester City maintained a perfect start to the Premier League season with a 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium. The high-scoring match featured goals from Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo (who scored twice), and Erling Haaland. Sunderland's Brian Brobbey netted a hat-trick, making him the first player since 2007 to score a hat-trick in a losing effort in the Premier League.
Erling Haaland's late goal also marked a significant milestone, as he has now scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced since joining the club in 2022. Manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with the win but noted the team's defensive vulnerabilities, stating, “I prefer to win 1-0 than 5-3.”
In other Premier League action, Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 win against Bournemouth with a goal from Alexander Isak, moving them to sixth in the standings. Meanwhile, Manchester United struggled to a 1-1 draw against Fulham, leaving them in 12th place after failing to win in three consecutive matches.
