Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca as head coach on a three‑year contract running to the summer of 2029, succeeding Pep Guardiola who left after a decade in charge. The 46‑year‑old Italian previously worked for City’s U‑23 side, served as Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022‑23 treble, and later managed Leicester City and Chelsea, winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup with the Blues.

Chelsea confirmed that Maresca resigned on 1 January 2026, citing a desire to join City. The club described the departure as a “disruption” to a disappointing 2025‑26 season and announced a confidential settlement with Manchester City, including a compensation payment reported at around £17‑20 million (≈€20 m) to release Maresca from his contract, which ran until 2029.

City’s announcement highlighted Maresca’s familiarity with the club’s philosophy, calling the organization “incredibly well‑run, innovative and purpose‑driven,” and framed the hire as a continuity move rather than a radical change. Maresca expressed enthusiasm, saying the role is a “brilliant opportunity” and that he looks forward to winning and playing good football at the Etihad.
