Manchester Piccadilly Gardens redesign proposal submitted

Landscape architecture practice Planit has submitted a proposal to Manchester City Council for the redesign of Piccadilly Gardens. Working alongside structural engineer Civic and main contractor Galliford Try, the project aims to overhaul the 4-hectare civic plaza in central Manchester.

The plan involves removing existing concrete elements, including low walls and fountains from a 2002 design by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, to make way for increased green space and 49 new trees. The proposal also includes improved children’s play areas, upgraded CCTV, and enhanced lighting to address safety concerns. While the concrete retail pavilions will be kept, a new welcome pavilion is expected to be submitted as a separate application.

Additionally, the project includes the restoration and cleaning of three listed statues depicting Queen Victoria, James Watt, and Robert Peel. To further improve security, Manchester City Council is collaborating with Greater Manchester Police to increase the police presence within the park.
