Manchester United debates Julian Nagelsmann versus Michael Carrick for permanent manager

Former United captain Gary Neville and pundits Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Jill Scott have been discussing the club’s next permanent manager. Neville repeatedly highlighted German coach Julian Nagelsmann, noting his experience at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich and his recent role as Germany’s national team manager. However, journalists point out that Nagelsmann cannot join any club until after the World Cup and that no formal approach has been made, with only preliminary salary talks reported.

Interim boss Michael Carrick, who guided United to Champions League qualification with ten wins in fourteen matches, is said to enjoy “unanimous agreement” among key decision‑makers at Old Trafford, according to a TEAMtalk report. Nonetheless, some board members remain cautious, and former players have listed other possible candidates, including Cesc Fàbregas, Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino and Luis Enrique. Scholes jokingly suggested Neville might have “insider info” on Nagelsmann, while acknowledging the club’s prudence in not rushing a decision.
