Manchester United debt reaches £1.15bn amid Man City ruling

A Premier League panel ruling that Manchester City’s income was overstated by more than £830 million has drawn renewed scrutiny to the finances of Manchester United. Following the ruling, Manchester United’s latest financial accounts submitted to the New York Stock Exchange reveal that the club’s total debt has risen to £1.15 billion, up from £667 million in June 2021.

Financial analyst Swiss Ramble estimates that Manchester United has paid approximately £852 million in net interest since the Glazer family’s leveraged takeover in 2005. For the most recent financial year ending June 30, 2026, interest payments increased to £37 million from £34 million the previous year.

Despite the debt, Manchester United reported record revenue of £677.6 million and projects revenue could reach £760 million for the 2026-27 financial year. The club also disclosed £191.7 million in spending on new players since June 30, with payments spread over five years. Chief executive Omar Berrada stated the club will maintain a “disciplined approach to ensure our finances remain sustainable.”
