Manchester United targets January transfers after summer squad gaps

Manchester United and Liverpool reportedly failed to secure the signature of 18-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Mateus Mane during the summer transfer window. Despite interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, Wolves maintained a firm stance that the player was not for sale. Mane, who had a breakout campaign last season, remains at Molineux as the club competes in the Championship.

Separately, Manchester United is expected to show urgency in the January 2027 transfer window. Following a summer focused on a midfield overhaul—which included signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba—the club faces scrutiny for failing to recruit a specialist left-back to support Luke Shaw.

While some reports suggest the squad maintains faith in Shaw, manager Michael Carrick has expressed concerns regarding the lack of depth in that position. Experts suggest United may target a new centre-forward and a left-back in January to avoid detrimental effects on the second half of the season.
