Manchester United eyes midfield overhaul with Ugarte exit and Mateta pursuit

Manchester United is planning a significant reshuffle of its midfield ahead of the new season. The club is reportedly preparing to part ways with Uruguayan defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who joined Old Trafford in 2024 for around £50 million but has failed to convince the coaching staff. Potential buyers include Crystal Palace, Everton and other Premier League sides.

At the same time, United have opened talks with Crystal Palace over the transfer of French forward Jean‑Philippe Mateta. The 28‑year‑old, who scored the winning goal in Palace’s Conference League final, is in the final year of his contract and is valued at roughly €50 million, though United aim to secure a reduced fee. The club also plans to release forward Joshua Zirkzee to free up space in a squad that will compete in four competitions simultaneously.
