Manchester United faces massive debt and leadership criticism

Manchester United is facing significant operational and financial challenges. Despite reporting record revenues of £677.6 million for the last financial year and an operating profit of £22.6 million, the club's total debt remains above £1 billion. This includes £577.6 million in historical debt and £111.4 million in revolving credit lines.

To improve financial sustainability, the club has implemented cost-cutting measures, including reducing wage expenses by £11.3 million and cutting approximately 450 staff positions. However, net financing costs rose by 228.3% to £69.6 million, largely due to currency losses. The club is also planning a major stadium project near Old Trafford, with an estimated value exceeding £2 billion.

On the sporting side, football legend Gary Lineker has criticized the club's leadership. Speaking on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, Lineker suggested that the issues at Manchester United stem from the top, specifically targeting the management under Jim Ratcliffe and noting that the club is in ‘complete disorder’ regarding its governance and declining talent retention.
