Manchester United reports massive transfer market losses

Manchester United has recorded the worst transfer market performance among European clubs over the last five years, according to an analysis by the CIES Football Observatory. The club has seen a total negative balance of approximately 405 million euros (roughly 334 million pounds).

This financial deficit is comprised of two main factors: a 186 million euro loss on players who have already departed the club, and a 219 million euro decrease in the estimated market value of players currently remaining in the squad. The report notes that globally, only the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal has recorded a larger deficit.

Specific high-profile transfers have contributed significantly to these losses. The Brazilian winger Antony, signed from Ajax for 95 million euros in 2022, was recently transferred to Real Betis for 25 million euros. Other notable financial setbacks include the transfer of Jadon Sancho and the departure of Rasmus Højlund to Napoli.
