Manchester United fans to revive historic banner against Manchester City
Manchester United supporters are set to display a historic banner at Old Trafford this Saturday during their match against Tottenham Hotspur. The banner, located in the Stretford End, has been brought out of storage for the first time since 2011.
Following the confirmation of financial irregularities involving Manchester City, the banner has been updated to read ‘51 years’. This is a revival of a tradition that began in 2000, originally counting the years since City had won a title. The previous version reached ‘35 years’ in 2011, when City won the FA Cup following the influx of investment from Abu Dhabi.
The updated message aims to dismiss City's recent successes, specifically the twenty titles won over the last 18 years, in light of allegations regarding 115 financial irregularities and inflated accounts totaling approximately 1,000 million euros between 2009 and 2018. The banner was produced by the group The Red Army at a cost of 114 pounds.
