Manchester United manager Michael Carrick defends midfield spending

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has defended the club’s recent midfield spending, asserting that the acquisitions of Andrey Santos for £50 million and Youri Tielemans for £35 million represent strong value. Despite Premier League rivals spending higher amounts—such as Manchester City’s £116 million for Elliot Anderson—Carrick emphasized that the quality and squad balance provided by the new signings are the primary measures of success.

The club is currently focused on rebuilding its midfield following the departure of Casemiro and a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte. United is also reportedly pursuing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba with a £65 million offer.

Additionally, Carrick indicated that captain Bruno Fernandes will likely face more rotation this season as the club competes across four competitions, including the Champions League. While Fernandes remains a central figure despite interest from clubs like Galatasaray, Carrick noted the importance of managing the 31-year-old’s fitness and freshness throughout the campaign.
