Manchester United officials admit summer midfield signings missed top targets

Manchester United leadership has reportedly acknowledged that summer midfield acquisitions Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were not the club’s primary targets. The £85 million combined investment has faced scrutiny following underwhelming performances, with Santos having featured for only 83 minutes across the first six league matches.

Following a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, analysts and pundits have suggested tactical changes ahead of the club’s Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of mobility and defensive coverage in the current midfield rotation, specifically involving Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo.

Journalist Henry Winter and former player Gary Neville have suggested that Carlos Baleba should be prioritized in the starting lineup to provide necessary defensive stability, noting that the current midfield setup leaves the team vulnerable when out of possession.
