Manchester United secures land for 100,000‑seat stadium near Old Trafford

Manchester United has purchased a 25‑acre (about 10 hectare) parcel of land located roughly 350 metres north‑west of Old Trafford. The site was bought from industrial property provider Indurent, a Blackstone portfolio company, removing the need to acquire adjacent freight‑terminal land that had previously hindered the project. Club officials said the acquisition is a crucial milestone for the proposed £2‑2.3 billion stadium, which would become the largest football venue in the United Kingdom and the second‑largest in Europe.

The new arena is part of a broader regeneration scheme covering around 150‑370 acres. Plans include roughly 15 000 new homes, 48 000 local jobs and over 90 000 national jobs, with an estimated contribution of more than £7 billion to the UK economy each year. Collette Roche, chief executive of the stadium development, said building close to Old Trafford will preserve the club’s heritage, traditions and match‑day rituals. Details of the full redevelopment and a public consultation are scheduled for 9 July, while final design work by Foster + Partners is set to resume now that the land hurdle has been cleared.
