Manchester United squad updates: De Ligt returns and Armer called up

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has provided updates on squad developments following the team's UEFA Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid.

Defender Matthijs de Ligt has returned to the matchday squad for the first time since November 2026. The 27-year-old has been sidelined due to a persistent back injury that required surgery in May. While he did not enter the pitch during the match, Carrick noted that his return to the bench is a positive step and indicated a cautious approach to reintegrating the defender into competitive action to ensure full fitness.

Additionally, 18-year-old academy prospect Dan Armer received a surprise call-up to the senior squad for the trip to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Under-21 coach Adam Lawrence praised Armer's progress and character, noting that the inclusion provides a significant learning opportunity for the young defender to experience high-level preparation alongside international players.
