Manchester United tackles defensive doubts and a Rashford swap as Michael Carrick prepares new season

Michael Carrick enters his first full campaign as Manchester United manager after guiding the club from seventh place to a Champions League berth (third in the Premier League). The team now faces a congested schedule that includes the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup, putting pressure on a defence that mixes youth and experience. United’s five centre‑backs – Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez – are all dealing with either injury history, inexperience or form concerns, raising questions about the back line’s reliability for the 2026/27 season.

At the same time, United is reportedly willing to include striker Marcus Rashford in a swap deal with Italy’s AS Roma to secure midfielder Manu Koné. The move aims to replace the departing Casemiro and cover the injury to midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Rashford, under contract until 2028 with a £40 million release clause, could be transferred to Roma in exchange for the 25‑year‑old French midfielder, whose €60 million price tag would satisfy Roma’s financial‑fair‑play needs. Saudi club Al Ahli has also shown interest in Koné, but United’s priority is to reshape its midfield while relieving Rashford’s high wages.
