Manchester United targets defensive reinforcements Lukeba and Van de Ven
Manchester United is reportedly planning a significant overhaul of its defensive line, with a primary focus on recruitment for 2027. Following previous investments in attacking and midfield positions, the club is looking to address vulnerabilities in its backline, including potential replacements for Harry Maguire and long-term succession planning for Lisandro Martinez.
One target identified is Castello Lukeba, a 23-year-old left-footed central defender currently playing in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig. Valued at approximately €50 million (£43 million), Lukeba is considered to fit the club’s preferred overseas profile.
Additionally, Manchester United is monitoring Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven. The 25-year-old is viewed as a potential candidate to bolster the squad due to his Premier League experience and ball-playing ability. However, United faces competition from Liverpool, who are also observing the Dutchman as they plan for life after Virgil van Dijk. Any potential move for Van de Ven is expected to be difficult and expensive due to Tottenham’s contractual position.
