Manchester United urged to break rules to retain Bruno Fernandes, says Michael Owen

Former England striker Michael Owen has told Manchester United they should ignore standard age‑related contract limits to keep Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Owen highlighted Fernandes' record‑breaking 2022‑23 Premier League season, in which he delivered 21 assists – surpassing the previous joint record of 20 held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne – and stressed that the player is essential for United's future success.

Fernandes' current deal runs until the summer of 2027 with an option for an additional year, and United previously considered letting him leave amid interest from Saudi club Al‑Hilal. Owen argued that the club must “break the rules” and offer a long‑term contract despite his age, calling him a “must” for the team's progression.
