Manchester United eyes midfield overhaul as Carrick named permanent manager

Michael Carrick has been confirmed as Manchester United's permanent manager following an interim spell. The club is close to a £38 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson but still faces the challenge of replacing departing midfield anchor Casemiro. Former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar told talkSPORT, "the big thing is Casemiro leaving, which will leave them a big gap in midfield," calling the task a "headache" for the new regime. Assistant coach Steve Holland, who joined Carrick's staff, is being highlighted as a vital behind‑the‑scenes figure.
