Manchester's £60m Greenheys laboratory building reaches completion

Practical completion has been achieved on the Greenheys building at Manchester Science Park, a 131,000 sq ft laboratory and office development costing £60 million. The project, delivered by construction firm Willmott Dixon, is part of the Bruntwood SciTech joint venture between Bruntwood, Legal & General and the Greater Manchester Penson Fund, and is described as the most scientifically capable space in the city.

Greenheys features flexible Containment Level 2 labs, high‑security access, dedicated service lifts and loading bays, and is BREEAM Excellent. It will become the new headquarters for UK Biobank, which plans to relocate 11 million biological samples from Stockport and move roughly half of its 400‑strong staff to the site. The building also includes Manchester’s largest living wall, composed of 160,000 plants.

The development is intended to support the growth of Manchester’s science, research and technology sectors, which are projected to contribute nearly a quarter of the city’s economy by 2028.
