Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla invests 63 million euros in Alicante water supply

The Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla (MCT) is investing over 63 million euros in 2026 to enhance water supply, efficiency, and sustainability in the province of Alicante. These investments target strategic facilities for production, treatment, regulation, and distribution, funded by the organization's own resources, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and FEDER funds.

A major portion of the investment is directed toward the Alicante desalination plant. Recent projects include the installation of a photovoltaic plant for self-consumption, costing over 5.6 million euros, and the replacement of Pelton turbines with isobaric energy recovery systems, an 11.2 million euro project aimed at reducing electricity consumption by approximately 7%.

Additionally, the MCT is implementing a nearly 3 million euro digitalization and automation project to modernize control systems and strengthen cybersecurity. Other works include the rehabilitation of decanters at the La Pedrera water treatment plant in Jacarilla, representing an investment of over 7 million euros.

In terms of consumption, the MCT reported that drinking water usage has stabilized after two years of increases, with 230 hectometres cubed distributed across 80 municipalities. The organization continues to work on modernization projects, including water purification in Lorca and infrastructure improvements in various municipalities to ensure supply for new urban developments.
