Manel Esteller discusses longevity and genetics

Genetics researcher Manel Esteller, director of the Epigenetics Group at Hospital Sant Pau, has released a new book titled ‘Historia de una supercentenaria, claves de la longevidad’ (History of a Supercentenarian, Keys to Longevity) alongside researcher Eloy Santos.

The work analyzes aging through the life of María Branyas, a resident of Olot who lived to be 117 years old. Esteller describes Branyas as an exceptional case of a very elderly yet remarkably healthy individual.

Esteller posits that longevity is determined by a 50/50 split between inherited genetics and daily lifestyle habits. He notes that while genetics provide a foundation, lifestyle choices directly influence cells and can chemically modify DNA. Key pillars for healthy aging include avoiding toxic habits like tobacco and alcohol, preventing sedentary behavior through moderate exercise, and combating obesity.
