Mangaluru transfer from Palakkad railway division sparks Kerala opposition

The Railway Board has approved the transfer of the Mangaluru area, including Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, from the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway to the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway. The decision is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.

Kerala officials and political leaders have expressed strong opposition to the move, calling it a “unilateral” decision made without consulting the state. Chief Minister V D Satheesan and other leaders warned that the transfer would significantly impact the Palakkad Division’s financial stability. Reports indicate the division could lose up to 60 percent of its revenue, as the Mangaluru area is a major source of freight and passenger income.

While the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) welcomed the decision, stating it would integrate the region better with Karnataka and open new markets, critics argue it will weaken the operational capacity of the Palakkad Division. Concerns have been raised regarding the division's ability to maintain infrastructure, introduce new trains, and sustain services following the loss of key revenue-generating sectors.
