Manggarai Timur earthquake relief visit draws local criticism

Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian visited Manggarai Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, to oversee earthquake relief efforts following seismic activity that began on August 15, 2026. The visit, ordered by President Prabowo Subianto, included participating in the 81st Indonesian Independence Day ceremony at Natas Lehong Field.

Karnavian stated that the presence of central government officials in the region is intended to demonstrate state support and accelerate post-disaster handling. He emphasized that the government is actively working to assist those affected by the disaster.

However, the local government's decision to hold a ceremonial welcome for the Minister has drawn significant criticism from residents on social media. Citizens expressed disappointment that local officials, including Regent Agas Andreas and Vice Regent Tarsisius Sjukur, prioritized ceremonial traditions and cultural displays over the urgent needs of earthquake victims who are still awaiting aid.
