Mangualde Municipality enforces zero tolerance for illegal waste disposal
The Mangualde Municipality has announced a “zero tolerance” policy regarding the improper disposal of urban waste near containers and recycling points. This decision follows a significant increase in irregular waste disposal incidents throughout the municipality in the Viseu district.
Local authorities will intensify inspections and initiate administrative proceedings whenever items are recovered that allow for the identification of those responsible. Fines for individuals are set between 250 and 1,500 euros, while legal entities face penalties ranging from 1,250 to 22,000 euros.
João Cruz, the Vice-President of the Mangualde Municipality and head of the Environment department, stated that leaving waste outside of designated containers is an infraction and a lack of respect for the community. The municipality noted that abandoned items—including bags, boxes, furniture, appliances, and construction debris—cause bad odors, attract animals, damage the town's image, and increase municipal cleaning costs.
