Manhattan Institute report: Transgender murders primarily driven by intimate partner violence
A report by Manhattan Institute researchers Vincent Lundgren and Colin Wright indicates that transgender people are murdered at lower rates than the general US population. The study, which examined over 300 murder cases since 2015, found that the primary motive for these killings is typically intimate partner violence rather than bias or hate.
According to the findings, confirmed hate crimes accounted for only 3.3% of the cases studied. Other common circumstances identified included robbery, disputes, sex-work encounters, and interpersonal conflicts. The researchers noted that in cases where suspects were identified, Black suspects accounted for 65% of perpetrators, while white suspects accounted for 18%. The report specifically challenges claims by organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign that there is an epidemic of violence against the transgender community driven by transphobia or white supremacy.
