New York City Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak Leads to Four Deaths

A Legionnaires’ disease cluster on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has infected dozens of residents. The New York City Health Department confirmed 74 cases as of July 19, later reporting a rise to over 100 cases in the broader city, with four confirmed deaths linked to the outbreak.

The infections were traced to contaminated cooling‑tower water in 76 buildings across ZIP codes 10028, 10075 and 10128. City officials ordered aggressive remediation, requiring owners to drain, clean and disinfect the towers. Most affected individuals have been discharged; eight remain hospitalized and several are recovering at home. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said, “It is with great sadness that I report another death… We remain confident the source of exposure has been eliminated.”

Authorities continue monitoring the area, urging anyone who visited the affected neighborhoods to seek medical care if flu‑like symptoms appear within two weeks of exposure. The city stresses that tap water, bathing and air‑conditioning use remain safe.
