Manhattan manhole incidents prompt NYPD investigation

The New York Police Department is investigating a series of incidents involving individuals emerging from manholes in various parts of New York City. The most recent event occurred around 4:00 a.m. on August 18 near Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. Video footage captured three individuals wearing black overalls and headlamps climbing out of a manhole before fleeing the scene.

This follows similar sightings in Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Williamsburg and Gravesend, as well as Astoria, Queens. In previous instances, groups of up to eight people were observed entering or exiting the sewer system during late-night hours. While the NYPD has confirmed that no damage to the infrastructure has been detected, the recurring nature of these events has prompted investigations into the motives of those involved.

Law enforcement officials are considering several theories, including underground scavenging for valuables. Some investigators have also suggested a potential link to migrants searching for items within the sewage system. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has issued warnings, noting that entering the sewers is illegal and extremely dangerous due to the risk of unstable surfaces and potentially fatal poisonous gases.
