Manic Miner classic to be remade for modern consoles

BBG Entertainment has announced a reboot of the 1983 ZX Spectrum classic Manic Miner, scheduled for release this autumn. The remake will be available on major platforms, including PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Windows, and Mac.

This authorized edition is fully sanctioned by the original creator, Matthew Smith. Unlike previous releases, this version ensures Smith will participate in the proceeds from every copy sold. The development team reconstructed the original code to maintain pixel-perfect accuracy while introducing modern enhancements.

Players can choose between two distinct visual styles: a Classic Mode featuring authentic pixel art and an optional CRT TV mode for nostalgia, and a Modern Mode that utilizes parallax scrolling, dynamic lighting, and detailed backgrounds. The game will include all 20 original levels, revamped controls, online leaderboards, and a contemporary rearrangement of the original classical soundtrack. Additionally, an archive will be included to document the game’s history from its early 1980s development to its cult status.
