Manicoré hit by hailstorm amid record heat in Amazonas

A severe hailstorm, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, struck Manicoré in southern Amazonas on Monday, August 10. The storm produced 22.8 mm of rain in just one hour, a volume typically expected for the entire month of August. The event caused damage in rural areas, including a destroyed roof and fallen trees in the Jerusalém community.

The storm occurred simultaneously with record-breaking heat across the state. While Manicoré experienced hail, Boca do Acre recorded temperatures exceeding 37°C, the highest in the state for that day. In Manaus, temperatures reached 36.1°C, the highest recorded in the capital for 2026 so far.

Meteorologists note that such phenomena can occur when high temperatures combine with sudden moisture in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds capable of producing intense storms, hail, and lightning, even during drought periods.
