Manicouagan composting platform reduces landfill waste

The commissioning of the Ragueneau composting platform has led to a significant reduction in waste sent to landfills for the eight member municipalities of Manicouagan. According to Isabelle Giasson, Director General of the Régie de gestion des matières résiduelles de Manicouagan, the amount of buried residual materials dropped from 8,008.03 tonnes in 2024 to 6,901.12 tonnes in 2025.

While the reduction of 1,106.91 tonnes is attributed to the new platform, Giasson noted that other factors such as citizen sorting habits, population changes, and regional economic activities also influence landfill quantities. The resulting compost has been screened to remove foreign objects, and analyses are currently underway to determine its category and potential uses.

If the quality meets requirements, the compost may be distributed to citizens for free; otherwise, it could be utilized in parks and other green spaces. A new characterization of buried residual materials is planned to identify further opportunities to divert recyclable materials from landfills.
