Manila Esposito wins European gymnastics medals following body shaming
Italian gymnast Manila Esposito responded to recent online body shaming by winning multiple medals at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb. The 19-year-old athlete secured a gold medal on the balance beam, along with two silver medals in the floor exercise and the team competition.
The harassment began after the Italian Gymnastics Federation posted a training video on social media, which prompted toxic comments regarding Esposito’s physical appearance and weight. Esposito admitted the comments temporarily affected her confidence prior to the competition but stated she chose to respond through her performance on the field rather than through digital arguments.
Andrea Facci, president of the Italian Gymnastics Federation, condemned the behavior of anonymous commenters. Additionally, the Metropolitan City of Naples expressed solidarity with the athlete, praising her resilience and character both in sports and in life.
