Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh reports progress toward lasting peace

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that, despite ongoing challenges, the state is seeing encouraging signs of peace returning. He highlighted the launch of a 10‑crore Addiction‑Free Pledge Mega Campaign under the Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyaan and Mission SPANDAN, and reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047. Singh recounted his visits to districts such as Ukhrul and Jiribam, noting that displaced members of Kuki, Meitei, Hmar and Paite communities are eager to return home and coexist.

Civil‑society initiatives are also emerging: the Thadou‑Meitei Covenant signed in August 2025 and a July 2026 visit by Zomi organisations (Unified Zou Organisation, Zomi Chief Association and Zomi Council) to meet the chief minister suggest a new architecture of peacebuilding beyond government and armed groups. Meanwhile, concerns persist over recurring violence, with reports of weapons looted from police armouries during the Meitei‑Kuki conflict remaining unaccounted for, and allegations that some SoO cadres are involved in armed incidents. Recent CRPF COBRA operations in Noney district have disarmed Naga Village Guards, fueling perceptions of selective security actions.
