Manipur CM calls for peace and orders crackdown on illegal arms

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called for collective efforts to bridge the trust deficit between communities and restore lasting peace in the state following the violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. Speaking at a lecture organized by the Assam Rifles, the Chief Minister emphasized that overcoming the current social divide requires sustained dialogue and understanding rather than mere rhetoric.

In a separate high-level security meeting, the Chief Minister ordered stringent action against any individual found in possession of illegal arms, regardless of their community. This directive follows a 15-day ultimatum issued on August 12 for the surrender of illegal weapons. The meeting was also held to address a recent incident in Kangpokpi district where four civilians were killed.

Authorities stated that militant cadres under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement who carry weapons outside designated camps will also face serious consequences. The security meeting included high-ranking state officials and representatives from central forces, including the CRPF and Assam Rifles.
