Manipur ethnic violence results in 306 deaths since 2023

The ethnic conflict in Manipur has resulted in at least 306 deaths and left 49 people missing since it began in May 2023, according to data provided by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam to the state Assembly. The violence initially erupted between the Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo communities following a march opposing Meitei inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes category.

Recent escalations in 2026 have expanded the conflict to include clashes between the Naga and Kuki-Zo tribal communities in the state’s hill districts. Human Rights Watch reported that at least seven people were killed in late August 2026 during these renewed hostilities. Since February 2026, these specific clashes have resulted in 34 deaths.

The conflict has led to significant displacement, with over 60,000 people forced from their homes. Armed groups have been involved in burning villages, taking hostages, and blocking highways. Following a period of President’s rule that began in February 2025, a new BJP-led government under Y Khemchand Singh was formed in February 2026.
