Manipur ex‑CM N Biren Singh audio recordings declared manipulated by Centre in Supreme Court

The Indian central government appeared before a two‑judge bench of the Supreme Court, urging dismissal of a petition that alleged former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had admitted to fueling insurgency during the state’s 2023 ethnic violence. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati relied on a forensic report from the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, which found the audio clips contained multiple alterations – 41 changes were identified in the extended recording – and could not confirm the voice belonged to Singh.

The petition, filed by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust, originally relied on a 48‑minute excerpt and later produced a full 2‑hour‑26‑minute recording. While an earlier analysis by Truth Labs claimed a 93 % voice match, the Centre emphasized the NFSU findings. The Court directed both parties to study the six‑page NFSU report before further proceedings.
