Manipur government facilitates return of displaced persons

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced that the state government is working to facilitate the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes. To address the trust deficit caused by the ongoing crisis, the government has engaged in multiple rounds of discussions with civil society organisations (CSOs).

During the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ in Imphal, the Chief Minister distributed financial benefits totaling Rs 2.19 crore to eligible labour card holders, specifically targeting IDP families. These funds were provided through various schemes, including the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (MBOCWWB) and special educational assistance for children in relief camps. Currently, approximately 2,531 IDPs are receiving aid via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Addressing the economic impact of the ethnic conflict that began in May 2023, Singh noted a loss of over Rs 1,200 crore in state GST revenue. He emphasized that peace and mutual trust are essential for the state's development and urged citizens to support the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision by avoiding strikes and blockades that harm local livelihoods and the economy.
