Manipur government seeks new site for NIT Manipur campus

The Manipur government has defended its handling of the delayed construction of the permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur. Government spokesperson and MLA Thokchom Radheshyam stated that the original 300-acre site allotted at Lamphelpat was found to be a marshy wetland, making it technically unsuitable for construction.

According to Radheshyam, soil testing revealed that building on the original site would require extensive piling and specialized foundation work. This would have escalated the estimated project cost from approximately Rs 300 crore to nearly Rs 1,000 crore. The Government of India indicated that the project could not proceed at the current location due to these financial and technical constraints.

The state government is currently working to identify and allot a suitable alternative site. Radheshyam emphasized that the administration remains committed to establishing the permanent campus and ensuring that students are not deprived of technical education due to these delays.
