Manipur leaders call for collective action to restore peace

Manipur leaders are calling for collective societal action to restore peace and normalcy following the ethnic violence that has persisted since May 2023. Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh addressed the state assembly, urging religious and community leaders to play a constructive role in bridging the trust deficit between different groups. He emphasized that all sectors of society must fulfill their responsibilities and maintain a spirit of humanity to achieve lasting stability.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also advocated for unity, specifically appealing to the public to shun violence to secure a better future for the younger generation. During a visit to the Kangpokpi district, the Chief Minister met with internally displaced persons from both the Meitei and Kuki communities, noting their shared desire to return to their homes. He called for forgiveness and reconciliation to overcome the hostilities.

In related legislative developments, the Chief Minister presented a request for supplementary grants totaling 3,861 crore rupees for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Approximately 90 percent of these funds are intended for centrally sponsored schemes, NABARD-supported projects, and externally aided projects aimed at development and ongoing regional initiatives.
