Manipur hosts Durand Cup trophy tour, heralding football revival

The three historic trophies of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup arrived in Imphal on Wednesday, marking the tournament's return to Manipur. A ceremony at the City Convention Centre was attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, senior army officials and representatives of the participating clubs. Bhalla described the event as “a catalyst for hope and renewal,” saying the crowds’ roar can heal and unite communities. The governor and chief minister highlighted football’s deep cultural roots in Manipur and its role in giving young players a platform to showcase talent before scouts and clubs.

The trophy bearers began a state‑wide roadshow from Sendra View Point on Loktak Lake, stopping at Moirang, Bishnupur, Tiddim Ground, Kangla Fort and Manipur University, where cultural performances and public displays drew enthusiastic crowds. The Imphal leg will see Group D matches at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium from July 28 to August 17, featuring NEROCA FC, TRAU FC, the Indian Navy Football Team and debutants FC Raengdai.
