Northeastern Indian states mark 80th Independence Day with policy updates

Northeastern Indian states marked India’s 80th Independence Day with various ceremonies and policy announcements.

In Nagaland, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio addressed the long-standing Naga political issue, reaffirming the government’s commitment to an honourable solution and noting the elevation of peace talks to a ministerial level. Rio also highlighted a tripartite MoU with the Centre and Assam to secure Nagaland’s share of mineral oil resources in the Disputed Area Belt. Additionally, he announced progress on Nagaki City, a modern incubation city in Chümoukedima district.

In Manipur, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh used Independence Day celebrations to call for collective efforts to rebuild mutual trust and achieve lasting peace following recent incidents in Kangpokpi district. The state also observed the 135th Patriots' Day to honor heroes of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed his government’s eight-year development record at the state-level function in Shillong. He noted that the Meghalaya Police received the President’s Police Colour and mentioned that the state’s living root bridges have been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List 2026.
