Manipur security forces arrest militants, seize weapons, stress intelligence policing
Manipur security agencies conducted multiple joint operations in the past 24 hours, arresting nine militants in one sweep and eight militants—including two women—in another. The arrests involved members of banned groups such as the Kangleipak Communist Party, the People’s Liberation Army and its political wing, the Revolutionary People’s Front. Seized material included a 9 mm pistol, a double‑barrel shotgun, hand grenades, six improvised explosive devices that were destroyed on site, as well as a cache of INSAS rifles, an MP‑5 sub‑machine gun, a self‑loading rifle, two .303 rifles, magazines, a smoke bomb and 379 rounds of ammunition. A separate operation also led to the arrest of a drug peddler, Arun Dutta, and the seizure of 80 g of brown sugar.
Manipur Police Director General Mukesh Singh highlighted the need for intelligence‑led policing, reviewing operational readiness across districts and visiting the historic first battalion of the Manipur Rifles, a unit with a 134‑year legacy. He urged stricter discipline, coordinated investigations and professional handling of cases involving extortion, kidnapping and weapons offenses.
The Assam Rifles complemented these efforts with civil‑military outreach in valley and hill districts, holding youth‑engagement programmes, community meetings and transporting relief supplies to the India‑Myanmar border area, reinforcing security cooperation and community ties.
