Manipur protesters stage sound protest against ethnic violence

Thousands of people across five valley districts in Manipur staged a “sound protest” on Friday evening to express frustration over ongoing ethnic conflict and recent killings. Organized by the civil society group Federation of Haomee, demonstrators used noise—including banging utensils, striking electric poles with hammers, honking vehicle horns, and beating drums—between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm to demand government action.

In Imphal, protesters marched toward the Kangla fort, a historic political and cultural center. While security forces attempted to block demonstrators at several junctions, hundreds reached the Kangla gate. Police reportedly used tear gas shells to disperse crowds gathered near the Lok Bhavan and the governor’s residence. Lights were also switched off across the state capital for approximately 10 minutes during the demonstration.

The protests follow the recent deaths of three individuals from the Meitei community in the Kangpokpi district. In response to those killings, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam stated that searches are underway, noting that three individuals have already been detained. Additional protester demands included the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and the deportation of undocumented migrants.
