Manipur RIMS Imphal to be upgraded to AIIMS status
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J. P. Nadda has agreed to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The decision was announced by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh following a meeting with Nadda in New Delhi on August 31.
The upgrade is intended to bolster tertiary healthcare, medical education, and research capabilities in Manipur and the broader northeastern region. By elevating RIMS to AIIMS status, the state aims to provide advanced specialist treatments and postgraduate training locally, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for complex medical care.
Additionally, the Union Minister approved a proposal to establish a new medical college in the Senapati district. This new institution is expected to expand healthcare access and medical education infrastructure in the state’s hill districts, improving the availability of trained professionals in areas outside the state capital.
