Manipur Shooting Leaves Volunteer Dead, Two CRPF Personnel Injured

On July 29, a gunfight erupted in Bitiyang village of Noney district, Manipur, when armed village volunteers from the Naga Village Guard opened fire on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) operation. The clash killed one volunteer and injured three other villagers. Two CRPF soldiers from the Cobra Battalion also sustained shrapnel wounds and received treatment.

The incident triggered protests by local tribal communities against the security operation. The JTC‑Manipur Working Committee announced an emergency shutdown of all national highways, railway projects and other national initiatives passing through four Naga‑area districts. The committee accused the Cobra team and the Jaliyangrong United Front of involvement in the attack and demanded arrests, a halt to operations in Naga villages, and restoration of justice.
