Manisa Celal Bayar University sequences genomes of key grape varieties

Researchers at Manisa Celal Bayar University have completed the full genome sequencing of two significant grape varieties: Sultani Çekirdeksiz and the Alaşehir ecotype of Red Globe. The project, supported by the university’s Scientific Research Projects Coordination, aims to provide a genetic foundation for future agricultural advancements.

The genomic data has been uploaded to the international NCBI GenBank database under BioProject number PRJNA1175541, making it accessible to the global scientific community. This transparency is intended to facilitate detailed studies into the genetic structures of these varieties.

Led by Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Emine Dilşat Yeğenoğlu, the research team hopes the data will be used to develop grape varieties with improved yield, higher quality, and increased resilience to environmental stressors such as drought and disease. Sultani Çekirdeksiz is particularly noted for its importance in dried raisin production and export, while the Red Globe ecotype holds significant economic value for regional cultivation.
