Manisa doctor arrested for allegedly extorting patients for surgeries
An orthopedic specialist, identified as S. E., has been arrested in Manisa, Turkey, following allegations of extorting patients for surgical procedures. The investigation, conducted by the Manisa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, began after a patient reported being asked to transfer 45,000 TL to the doctor's personal bank account to ensure the specialist performed their surgery.
Authorities examined bank records between August 2025 and April 2026, identifying 51 instances where patients—whose surgeries were covered by the Social Security Institution—were allegedly asked for additional payments ranging from 22,000 TL to 195,000 TL. Through bank EFT records, investigators identified approximately 2.6 million TL in illicit gains, though this total does not include suspected cash payments.
The doctor allegedly threatened patients, stating that if they did not pay the personal fees, their operations would be carried out by assistant physicians instead. S. E. was subsequently arrested on charges of 'extortion by coercion'.
