Northern Cyprus faces higher education challenges amid regional health initiatives
Various regional initiatives in Turkey and Northern Cyprus are focusing on student welfare, public health, and education. In Northern Cyprus, Democratic Party General Secretary Serhat Akpınar warned of a crisis in higher education, noting that only 20 percent of additional placement quotas were filled for the 2026-2027 academic year. Akpınar called for a unified higher education vision to address rising living costs and visa complexities.
In Turkey, several local programs aim to support student and community health. In İzmir, the Metropolitan Municipality continues to provide daily nutrition packages to approximately 2,000 primary school students in disadvantaged areas. Other regional efforts include health awareness training for students in Maçka and Kahramanmaraş, and community sports activities in Çorum. Additionally, health officials in Aydın and Yerköy are conducting training and information sessions for medical professionals and youth regarding clinical practices and healthy living habits.
