Manisa Mayor sets December 31 deadline to stop accepting Izmir waste

Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Besim Dutlulu has announced that the Manisa Solid Waste Disposal Facility will stop accepting waste from Izmir after December 31.

Dutlulu stated that the influx of waste from Izmir, which was organized by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change without consulting the local municipality, has pushed the facility to its capacity limits. He noted that the high volume of incoming waste has prevented proper sorting processes, causing the facility to shift toward “wild” or unregulated landfilling.

The Mayor emphasized that maintaining capacity is critical for managing Manisa’s own waste. While he expressed a desire to halt the practice immediately, he noted that such a decision requires state authorization. He expects the Ministry and the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to find a permanent solution before the end-of-year deadline.
