Turkish cities launch multi‑billion climate resilience projects
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality’s water authority (İZSU) is executing a 3 billion‑TL rain‑water separation programme under the World Bank‑financed TEFWER project. The work, centred on the central districts of Konak, Bayraklı and Karabağlar, installs separate rain‑water and sewer pipelines and is expected to eliminate flood risk and reduce sewage overload.
In parallel, İZSU is drilling 25 new drinking‑water wells in the districts of Ödemiş, Kiraz and Beydağ as part of its 2026 investment plan, aiming to safeguard supply during summer droughts.
Manisa Metropolitan Municipality hosted a climate‑risk workshop using the EU‑approved Climaax framework. The event, attended by 96 officials, academics and NGOs, identified four priority hazards – drought, forest fires, urban heat islands and floods – and outlined data‑driven adaptation strategies for the city.
